Did you know that the Owen Sound Emancipation Festival has run continuously since 1862? That makes it the longest Emancipation picnic in all of North America. Owen Sound was the northern terminus of the Underground Railroad. For more information check the website to find out what is happening on the Civic Holiday weekend (1st weekend of August).
A few highlights of the weekend
July 30 - 7-9:30 p.m. The Speaker's Forum and Art Exhibit at Grey Roots - paid entry
July 31 - 1 to 8:30 p.m. - The picnic includes musical entertainment at Harrison Park - paid entry for those 12 and over.

People come from a distance to attend this celebration and all are welcome to attend.
The South Grey Museum is also planning a celebration bus trip to the picnic. Cost for the bus trip includes the transportation and admittance to the park. At noon, before starting on the trip, there will be an interactive presentation about the significant local black history of southern Grey County. The bus will leave at 12:30 p.m. and return at 5:30 p.m. For more information and to book your seat in advance, contact the museum at museum@greyhighlands.ca or 519-924-2843. Costs are adults $20.00, seniors $15.00 and those 12 and under $7.00.
