Happy St. Patrick's Day

Happy St. Patrick's Day

In the 2001 Canadian Census, people were asked their origins. The chart below shows the makeup of Grey County as answered by those who filled out their forms.

You will note that Irish is the fourth in terms of numbers.

In the 1871 census "Origin: The census enumerator was instructed to record paternal ethnic origin. Thus a person with a Scottish mother and Irish father was recorded as being of Irish origin." (Library & Archives Canada)

This chart was prepared by Grey Roots for a Celtic Festival a number of years ago. The mauve area shows Irish. The other would have been mainly those of English origin.

In Grey County, several places take their names for places in Ireland. Dromore, Egremont Township in the Township of Southgate received its name from a settler who had come from Dromore in Tyrone County, Ireland.

To learn more about place names in Grey County, be sure to attend tomorrow's Historical Society Meeting at Grey Roots at 1:30 p.m. We hope to see you there.
